Obama speaks firmly to students and supporters at the U of M in Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR (Tell Us USA) - President Barack Obama called Friday for an overhaul of the higher education financial aid system, warning that colleges and universities that fail to control spiraling tuition costs could lose federal funds.

The election year proposal was also a political appeal to young people and working families, two important voting blocs for Obama. But the initiative faces long odds in Congress, which must approve nearly all aspects of the president's plan.

 
 

NAIAS 2012 closes with smiles, high-fives, and best crowds in six years

DETROIT - After a spectacular nine day run, the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) 2012 is in the books. Today's attendance of 101,141 topped last year's final day numbers of 98,106, bringing total attendance of the 2012 show to 770,932, the highest since 2005.

Bill Perkins, chairman, NAIAS, said the show lived up to its reputation of being one of the top in the world.

DMC Launches “A New Era” In Cardiac Care With Groundbreaking For New Heart Hospital

DETROIT–The Detroit Medical Center (DMC) broke ground today on construction of the long-anticipated DMC Heart Hospital, during ceremonies for what officials said would mark the beginning of “a new era” in cardiac care in Michigan.

The groundbreaking event took place at the hospital construction site near the intersection of Mack and Brush Avenues in midtown Detroit, and included DMC and Vanguard officials, and community leaders and elected officials from all across Michigan.  

 
 

Shelby Township Man Charged in Fatal Car Crash Killing Two Children

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Today Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged David Leslie Lamberson, 62 of Shelby Township in connection with a fatal car crash that killed a 2-year old child and an 8-year-old child who were passengers in a car driven by their mother, Arlita Lee, 28 of Detroit.

On January 8, 2012 at 6:15 p.m. at Hoover and near Sturgis it is alleged that Lamberson was driving under the influence of alcohol, veering left of center, and travelling at a high rate of speed on a residential street when he crashed head on into the car of Ms. Lee killing her 2-year-old child.

Purdue holds off Western Mich for 37-32 win in Little Caesars Pizza Bowl

DETROIT - Purdue quarterback Caleb TerBush took the final snap, sprinted to the sideline and handed the football to coach Danny Hope.

Perhaps empowered by getting a contract extension recently, Hope made the gutsy decision to go for two onside kicks in the first half and both gambles paid off for the Boilermakers in a 37-32 win over Western Michigan on Tuesday night in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

Tax cut survives: Congress votes holiday approval

WASHINGTON - Barely beating Santa's sleigh, Congress delivered a last-minute holiday tax-cut extension to 160 million American wage-earners on Friday, just when it looked like they and millions of unemployed workers were going to be left with coal in their stockings.

It was a major yearend political victory for President Barack Obama, a big slice of humble pie for House Republicans and a blow to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, who'll have an angry band of tea party lawmakers to deal with when Congress returns to Washington next month. 

 
 

National Kidney Foundation of Michigan Supporters Raise More Than $500,000 at 7th Annual Kidney Ball

DETROIT - On Saturday, December 3rd, the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM), the largest affiliate of the National Kidney Foundation in the United States, gathered friends and supporters for the 7th Annual Kidney Ball at the MGM Grand Detroit. The charity event, themed “Motown Magic,” attracted nearly 700 attendees and raised more than $500,000. $25,000 Reward: Weeks later no sign of missing two-year-old Bianca Jones

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Two year-old Bianca Lily Jones was last seen a week ago Friday, December 2nd, while in the care of her father, D'Andre Lane. He claims he was car-jacked at gunpoint by two men. Lane also says when they stole his vehicle, they took off with his little girl in tow.

Welfare Office delays "rocket docket" cases for cash assistance review

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - A Michigan Department of Human Services office in Detroit was the scene of protests, confusion, and anger this morning. This was the day people losing welfare cash assistance had a chance to challenge that decision, but the hearings were delayed.

People losing cash-assistance were told to be at the Department of Humans Services office at 8 o’clock this morning and to be prepared to spend the day waiting for their teleconferenced hearing to be conducted. Three hours later, the hearings had not started.

DETROIT - More than 700 people took over and shut down the city’s 2ndAvenue Bridge for more than an hour Thursday, in the strongest showing yet by Good Jobs Now to call attention to the region’s continued economic crisis and high unemployment rate.

Citing an “Economic Emergency for the 99 percent,” ministers joined residents from all walks of life in blocking traffic to and from the 2nd Avenue Bridge near I-94. 
 

 
 

Michael Jackson's doctor sentenced to 4 years

LOS ANGELES - The doctor convicted in the overdose death of Michael Jackson was sentenced to the maximum four years behind bars Tuesday by a judge who denounced him as a reckless physician whose actions were a "disgrace to the medical profession."

Dr. Conrad Murray sat stoically with his hands crossed as Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor repeatedly chastised him for what he called a "horrific violation of trust" while caring for Jackson.

Hundreds march as Labor joins Occupy Detroit for rally downtown

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Over 400 Union members and Occupy Detroit supporters joined in a show of solidarity to fight for social justice for working people in Detroit and everywhere. This was an opportunity for labor and the community to come together as one. The rally cry was loud and clear. We are the 99%!

Beginning at 2:00 pm Sunday afternoon demonstrators gathered at Hart Plaza for a march up Woodward Ave. to the Occupy Detroit camp in Grand Circus Park.

Movement organizers received a big boost from local UAW members on this sun filled, fall day with donations of all kinds (cash, food, clothing and camping supplies).   

 
 

Mayor, Union come to agreement,  Detroit bus service resumes

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Mayor Dave Bing, was joined by the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), and Detroit Police Department officials announce an agreement that will end today's bus driver work stoppage. Early this morning DOT bus drivers refused to go on their routes the day after a driver was beaten by two teen-aged passengers.

Henry Gaffney, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 26 that represents drivers, told a local radio station that the drivers' action wasn't organized by the union. Rather by the bus drivers who feared for their safety following Thursday's altercation.
 

 
 

Detroit Honors Sculptor of Historic Memorials at 10th Anniversary

DETROIT (Tell Us Det)  - Ed Dwight, renowned sculptor of two internationally recognized monuments dedicated to the history of the Underground Railroad, was in Detroit recently to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his memorials: “Gateway to Freedom” at the foot of Hart Plaza and “Freedom Tower” on the shores of Windsor, Canada.

“Public art is a distinctive way to tell a story” said Dwight who spoke at a commemoration of the statures attended by, a Washington D.C. representative from the Interior Department, the curator of the African American Civil War Museum, local officials who brought resolutions and descendents of African Americans who traveled from Windsor to Detroit. 

 
 

DPS adds teachers as enrollment grows

DETROIT - Detroit Public Schools has updated data regarding class size issues that have arisen in recent weeks as additional students enroll. Overall enrollment has risen to exceed budgeted projections by almost 300 students, and the district responds to unexpected needs caused by teacher retirements and resignations.

“The good news is that children are still enrolling,” said Steven Wasko, Assistant Superintendent for Community Relations and Chief Communications Officer. “We also know that there are many classes that have as few as 15 or 17 students. For the remaining cases exceeding our limits, affecting 22 out of more than 4,000 classrooms, we are resolving the issues at this time.”

Specifically, the district's academic leadership had been made aware of 89 requests for additional teachers from principals at 34 schools as of October 19. Forty-four of those teachers were deployed as of Wednesday.

The additional 45 teachers have been recalled, a process that allows the teacher up to 10 days to report based on the current union contract. Of those 45, 23 have already reported and the remaining 22 will return within that 10-day window. In those 22 classrooms spread across eight schools, the district has deployed substitutes in all cases.

 
 

Harper Woods High School Student Coordinator Charged With Sex Crimes

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Maurice Lamont Bulls, 40 of Southfield with Child Sexually Abusive Activity, a felony that carries a 15 year maximum penalty and assault and battery, a 93 day misdemeanor.

On October 17, 2011, at Harper Woods High School, Bulls was supervising a 17-year-old female night school student in his capacity as the Safe and Supportive School Coordinator. The allegations are that Bulls took the student to a room and photographed her with her clothing on and pulled her shirt and touched her. He attempted to convince the student to allow him to take nude photos indicating that the photos could be sold for profit. The student refused to cooperate. She came forward to the police and reported the incident.

DETROIT - A recent news report in one of our local papers did a compelling and uplifting story on Detroit, tying the city's resurgence and improved national image to the success of the Detroit Lions and Tigers, improvements in the auto industry, downtown businesses development and other initiatives.

However, it dismissed the city's neighborhoods as problem plagued, saddled with thousands of abandoned buildings, poor services and residents who have little hope for making things better. While some of this is painfully true, there is more - much more -- to the story. 

 
 

Detroit police searching for suspect in criminal sexual assault case

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - The above composite is of a male suspect wanted for the criminal sexual conduct of a 10-year-old-female.

On Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at approximately 8:30 a.m., the victim and 6-year-old female witness were walking to school in the 2300 block of VanDyke. The suspect grabbed the victim from behind and began to inappropriately touch her. The victim yelled, telling the witness to run. As the witness ran, the suspect then fled on foot. The victim ran and caught up to the witness, both going to the local school to report the incident.

 
 

52 Chefs, 52 Weeks, 52 Meals to help Feed The Need

DETROIT, MI - On Wednesday, October 19, the first of 52 nutritious luncheon meals will be served at Detroit's Cass Community Center by Buffalo Wild Wings as part of the 52-week Detroit Area Chefs Feed the Need program. Every Wednesday for 52 weeks a different metro Detroit restaurant or catering company will serve up lunch on a rotation schedule at five soup kitchens in Detroit and Pontiac. Five arrested as 150 Occupy Oakland County GOP Headquarters

BLOOMFIELD, MI – Police arrested five individuals after 150 area residents, including some members of Good Jobs Now, “occupied” the Oakland County Republican Party headquarters on Monday, October 17, 2011 to protest GOP opposition to President Obama’s jobs bill.

The afternoon “occupation” lasted about 90 minutes, when residents came to the headquarters on Woodward Avenue Monday afternoon to query why Michigan’s Republican Congress people have opposed the American Jobs Act, which would invest more than $900 million in Michigan and create 11,700 jobs.

Co-founder of A4L sentenced to 84 months in prison for $3.32 million fraud on DPS

DETROIT - The co-founder of Associates for Learning (A4L), who submitted $3.32 million dollars in fraudulent invoices to Detroit Public Schools (DPS) was sentenced today to 84 months' imprisonment and ordered to pay restitution to the Detroit Public Schools, United States Attorney Barbara L. McQuade announced today. Ms. McQuade was joined in the announcement by Special Agent in Charge Andrew G. Grants announced during Mich. stop by US DOT boss

DEARBORN, MI - U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced $46.7 million for 16 Michigan projects that will put people to work renovating and building needed transit facilities, put more clean-fuel buses on the road and help communities plan for their future transit needs.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab pleads guilty to all eight counts

DETROIT, MI (Tell Us USA) - Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the so-called “underwear bomber,” pleaded guilty today in federal court to all eight counts of the indictment, United States Attorney Barbara L. This is not another conversation on the working poor or those who are on welfare and being threatened of being cut off. This time it’s about America’s “overachievers”. The individuals with MBA’s, Doctoral degrees or those who have earned huge success after years of working in their industry. Today, some are small business owners, while others are simply skilled at what they do. In most cases, they have exhausted their unemployment benefits, spent much of their savings or buyouts, with not much to hang their hat on, and now wondering what’s next.  

 
 

Civil rights warrior: the Rev. Shuttlesworth dies at 89

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth refused to back down despite huge risks, enduring arrests, beatings and injuries from fire hoses aimed at blacks marching for racial equality in the segregated South of the early 1960s. He died this week at age 89, lauded for his fearlessness in that fight.

When others feared standing up to fire hoses and snarling police dogs in his native Alabama, Shuttlesworth soldiered on with his civil rights campaign. Alabama's first black federal judge, U.W. Clemon, said Shuttlesworth flung himself at injustice well knowing he could be killed at any moment.

"He was the first black man I knew who was totally unafraid of white folks," said Clemon, a practicing lawyer since retired from the bench.  

 
 

Charles Jones charged in the murder of Je'rean Blake

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged the father of Aiyana Jones, Charles Jones, 26, of Detroit in connection with the May 14, 2010 death of Je’rean Blake. The fatal shooting occurred on Mack and St. Jean after an argument with Chauncey Owens outside a party store at approximately 2:45 p.m. It is alleged that, after the argument, Jones accompanied Owens to the scene of the shooting and aided, abetted, and encouraged Owens during the murder of Blake.  

 
 

Detroit officer charged in girl's death amid raid

DETROIT - A Detroit police officer was charged Tuesday in the slaying of a 7-year-old girl who was shot to death during a midnight raid on her home by a special unit that was being shadowed by a reality television show crew.

Officer Joseph Weekley, a member of the Detroit Police Special Response Team, was indicted on an involuntary manslaughter charge after a nearly yearlong Michigan State Police investigation into the May 16, 2010, death of Aiyana Stanley-Jones.

Cain: Perry insensitive over name of hunting camp

WASHINGTON - Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain on Sunday criticized rival Rick Perry as being insensitive for not acting sooner in removing the racially offensive name from a rock outside the Texas hunting camp his family once leased.

Perry's campaign countered that Perry's father painted over the rock to cover the name, Niggerhead, soon after he began leasing the site in the early 1980s. While the Texas governor later joined the lease, neither he nor his family ever controlled, owned or managed the property, the campaign said in a statement. 

 
 

Daughter returned home to mother involved in 12-hour police standoff

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - A Detroit mother has regained custody of the daughter she lost after refusing to give the teen a powerful anti-psychotic drug and holding police at bay outside their home.

A juvenile court judge ruled Thursday that Maryanne Godboldo can take her daughter Ariana home. Outside the courthouse Thursday, Godboldo was clearly relieved. “I feel wonderful, of course, because my daughter has been legally, on paper, given back to me … which, in my mind, she’s never been taken away,” Godboldo said.

Crime down 37 percent at Detroit Public Schools compared to first two weeks of school last year

11 Defendants Charged in 10 New DPS Cases

DETROIT - In 2009, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy, then Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb and the DPS Office of the Inspector General (OIG) headed by John Bell, began a collaboration to prosecute crime in the Detroit Public School System. President Obama talks tough at jobs rally in Detroit

Snyder signs welfare bills, cutting cash payments to needy families

LANSING, MI – Gov. Rick Snyder today signed legislation that will enforce a four-year lifetime limit on cash assistance, bringing Michigan in line with other states and ensuring limited resources are available to those who are truly in need.

“We are returning cash assistance to its original intent as a transitional program to help families while they work toward self-sufficiency and also preserving our state’s integral safety net for families most in need,” Snyder said. 

 
 

Obama tells Congress to cut taxes in his jobs plan

Attacking a deepening jobs crisis, President Barack Obama challenged a reluctant Congress Thursday night to urgently pass a larger-than-expected $450 billion plan to "jolt an economy that has stalled." He urged lawmakers to slash Social Security taxes for tens of millions of Americans and for almost every business to encourage hiring.

Hundreds turn-out for Detroit Public Schools’ largest back-to-school parade

DETROIT, MI - Detroit Public Schools’ third annual Back-to-School Parade and Rally on Saturday August 27 was the district’s largest ever, with more than 1,000 marchers in 49 units high-stepped their way down Woodward Avenue from Grand Circus Park to Hart Plaza. Women's Pioneer and Motown Museum founder Esther Gordy Edwards, die at 91

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - The Motown Museum made the announcement Thursday. The museum, which Edwards founded, says she died Wednesday night in Detroit surrounded by family and friends.

Edwards was a Motown executive for nearly three decades, holding numerous leadership positions within the music company whose artists included Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and The Four Tops. Motown Records, which Berry Gordy started with a family loan in 1959, churned out scores of global hits from the building it dubbed "Hitsville, U.S.A." in Detroit. The company moved to Los Angeles in 1972. 

 
 

Community step in to support mother and child, judge tosses case

DETROIT, MI (Tell Us Det) - Judge Ronald Giles dismissed all criminal charges against Maryann Godboldo today. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office will determine if an appeal will be taken to the Circuit Court. Defendant Godboldo had been charged with Discharge of a Weapon, three counts of Felonious Assault, Resisting and Obstructing an Officer and Felony Firearm.

Judge Ronald Giles ruled that the Juvenile Court order to remove Godboldo's daughter was not valid. However, Judge Lynn Pierce, Wayne County Third Circuit Court Judge in Family Court, held a lengthy hearing and determined the court order was valid.

The City of Detroit and U.S. Coast Guard hold International Security Exercise  on Detroit River Aug. 23-24

DETROIT - The City of Detroit and the U.S. Coast Guard will work with more than 60 U.S. and Canadian agencies to stage an exercise on August 23-24 involving an explosion on the Detroit Princess boat, evacuation of passengers and an oil spill on the Detroit River.

The full-scale exercise involves U.S. and Canadian agencies at the federal, state, and local levels and will test and measure the Area Maritime Security Plan, contingency plans of participating agencies, and public information outreach. Detroit River Readiness 2011 will take place along the Detroit River Corridor from Trenton to Detroit and Windsor.

4 month old missing Detroit infant returned to father

DETROIT, MI (Tell Us Det) - A 4 month-old girl has been returner to her farther and grandmother after she went missing at an emotional custody hearing in Juvenile Court earlier this week.

This is the latest episode in a  story that started last Friday in Dearborn when Damon Daniel and his girlfriend Ebony Gaines, the baby's mother, had an argument that ended with Damon shooting and killing Ebony.

Wayne County prosecutors say Daniel acted in self defense last Friday when he shot and killed his fiancée, Ebony Gaines, in Dearborn.

Tell Us Detroit has been told that Evelyn Daniel appears to be fine, but was taken to the hospital to get checked out as a precaution.

 
 

Police work nonstop after 7 killed in Detroit's lawless communities

DETROIT - Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said reducing violent crime is his administration's top goal in the wake of a 24-hour period that was packed with gun violence and left six people dead and nine wounded around the city.

The shootings happened at nine locations between 6 a.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday, police said.

From Jan. 1 through last Monday, there were 215 homicides in Detroit, up from 183 in the same period of 2010, according to police records.

Man Charged in Shooting Death of 3-Year-Old Girl

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Devin Lamar Taylor, 21, of Detroit in connection with the July 10, 2011 homicide of 3-year-old Aarie Berry at approximately 9:40 p.m., in the 3100 block of Canton in Detroit.

Earlier in the day, there was an altercation and it is alleged that Taylor came back to Canton Street and fired multiple shots in retaliation. Aarie Berry was inside her home on Canton at the time she was fatally shot.

UAW, GM Kick Off 2011 Contract Talks
DETROIT (Tell Us USA) – The United Auto Workers and General Motors opened 2011 contract talks Wednesday together on the factory floor at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, replacing the traditional formal handshake with a crowd of plant workers and the GM cars they build.

Ex-Detroit mayor released from prison, now headed to Texas

JACKSON, (Tell Us Det) - Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick walked out of a prison this morning after serving 14-month of an 18 months to five-year sentence for violating probation on felony charges stemming from the text-message scandal.

Burned remains of the child found in a house on Waverly Street is 5 year old Mariha Smith

DETROIT (Tell Us Detroit) - On Friday July 29, the Detroit Police Department received the results of the DNA testing from the Michigan State Police crime lab. The results determined that the burned remains of the child found in a burned out house on the city's westside is Mariha Smith.

Earlier in the week firefighters found the girl's chared body on a mattress of the burning two-family flat about a mile from her home.

The Detroit Police Department began investigating the case involving the arson fire at the home located in the 2900 block of Waverly. The Southeast Michigan Crimes Against Children Task Force also began searching for the 5-year-old who had gone missing.

Downtown Detroit companies offer incentives to employees who move close to the job

1st cruise ship arrives ahead of dock opening

DETROIT - A cruise ship from Cleveland and a number of dignitaries are expected for the dedication of a new dock on the Detroit River capable of handling cruise ships.

Monday marks the opening of the $22 million Public Dock and Terminal on the Detroit River. Participants in the 10 a.m. ceremony include Mayor Dave Bing. U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, U.S. Rep. Hansen Clark and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano.

The event includes a ringing of a bell engraved with the names of the 29 men who died in the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior on Nov. 10, 1975.

  Man charged in assault of 70-year-old woman held on $1 Million bond

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - 49-year-old Christopher Elledge was charged Thursday in the beating and robbery of a 70-year-old woman that was caught on surveillance video.

Christopher Elledge was arraigned in 36th District Court on home invasion, unarmed robbery, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, larceny and larceny in a building. His bond was set by the court at $1 million. 
 
 
 

DPS appoints former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Labor as Director of expanded Charter Schools Office

DETROIT - Emergency Manager Roy S. Roberts today announced the appointment of Doug Ross, former U.S Assistant Secretary of Labor and founder and CEO of New Urban Learning and the University Prep charter schools, to head Detroit Public Schools’ expanded Charter Schools Office.

As the Director of Charter Schools, Ross will lead the DPS charter authorizing office to ensure that all DPS charters are high performing schools. The district is expanding the number of DPS-authorized charter schools from nine to 14 for the fall. The University Prep schools are among the highest performing charters in the City of Detroit.

The end of an era: Demolition begins on Ford Auditorium

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Friday morning the long awaited demolition began on Ford Auditorium. Mayor Dave Bing, administration officials successfully advanced a project that had been stagnated for decades.

“The demolition of the Ford Auditorium is another step forward for the City of Detroit, the city’s downtown and the emerging waterfront,” said Mayor Dave Bing. “We have seen great improvement to the waterfront and are now presented another opportunity to increase access to the river.”

Funded by bond dollars the demolition of Ford Auditorium will cost approximately $780,000.

Governor, DPS Emergency Manager unveil education reform plan for failing schools

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) A new authority for improving academic achievement in the lowest 5% of public schools statewide and in Detroit was announced Monday at Renaissance High School by Governor Rick Snyder and DPS Emergency Manager Roy Roberts.

The Education Achievement System, outlined by Governor Snyder, intends to dramatically increase student performance by introducing major changes in school structure and operation in schools not realizing satisfactory results.   

 
 

Bing: City council cuts affect police, fire and recreation

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - The beach at Belle Isle, public park restrooms and two recreation centers could be forced to close if the city council fails to reconsider additional cuts to Detroit's city budget, Mayor Dave Bing said Monday.

About $50 million in council cuts to Bing's $3.1 billion budget for the next fiscal year also would reduce the number of police officers on Detroit streets and potentially shutter some fire stations, Bing said in a release.

Bing vetoed the council's budget June 1, but the body voted 8-1 last week to override his veto.

Bing and coalition of unions agree on concessions


DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Members of the City’s non-uniform coalition of unions reached a tentative agreement with Mayor Bing and his negotiating team last night.

This tentative agreement is the first meaningful step in achieving the necessary concessions and structural changes to resolve the city’s financial crisis.

Bing said Thursday that the deal was reached Wednesday night, though union members still have to ratify it.

Detroit's Ambassador Bridge owner ordered to jail


DETROIT - A judge ordered the 84-year-old owner of Detroit's Ambassador Bridge to jail Thursday for failing to meet court orders on a construction project linking the span to adjacent interstates.

Wayne County Judge Prentis Edwards said Manuel "Matty" Moroun and top lieutenant Dan Stamper will stay in jail until they comply with a 2010 order to get the work going. It's unclear how long they'll be behind bars after an appeals court hours later refused to suspend the decision and release them.

"It is clear that the Detroit International Bridge Co. does not intend to comply with the court orders unless meaningful sanctions are imposed," Edwards said.

DETROIT/WINDSOR - For the second straight year, the Michigan Wing of the Civil Air Patrol and the Royal Canadian Air Cadets from the 364 Squadron in Windsor met at the US-Canada border crossing on the Ambassador Bridge to honor American and Canadian veterans.

Each year, in tribute to the 25 million men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces, more than 200,000 wreaths are laid at the grave sites of veterans across more than 500 cemeteries of memorial sites in all 50 states, as well as 24 foreign locations.

The ceremony consist of the placement and exchanging of wreaths, singing of national anthems and remarks from Canadian & US VIPs. DETROIT - 85th America’s Thanksgiving Parade
®, one of the country’s oldest and most celebrated parades produced by The Parade Company, stepped-off at Woodward Avenue and Mack today at 9:05 a.m. and came to an end at Woodward Ave. and Congress in downtown Detroit. This year’s theme was “So Much To Believe In.”

The two-hour Parade featured one-hour of national broadcast reaching more than 140 major cities across the country.

Thousands of parade-goers, young and old, braved the cool morning air as they lined up along Woodward Avenue parade route to see colorful floats, hundreds of clowns and giant heads, celebrities, and of course, the man of the hour, Santa Claus himself.

"The parade is one of those vehicles that bring people together," says Tony Michaels, president and CEO of the Parade Company, which creates the annual spectacle. "We view this as a major opportunity to put Detroit on a national stage. It is an impactful moment for the city."

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has addressed city residents and called for municipal unions to accept 10 percent pay cuts and Michigan leaders in Lansing to come through with 200 + millions owed the city so the struggling community can avoid falling into the hands of a state emergency finance manager.

Bing told an audience at the Northwest Activity Center Wednesday night that the city faces a $45 million cash shortfall by the end of its fiscal year next June. The city has an accumulated deficit about $150 million in its $3.1 billion annual budget.

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Detroit City Council members today approved a one-week extension to Occupy Detroit so protesters can clean up their camp at Grand Circus Park and move it to a warehouse on the city's southwest side.

This move will allow the Parade Company crews enough time to prepare the area for the Thanksgiving parade November 24, which will have grandstands set up at the park location.

The Occupy Detroit movement has made it clear it has no desire to interfere with the annual holiday event

Due to the close relationship some council members have with major supporters of the movement, like local trade unions, they would find it difficult not to offer some sort of concession to the occupy group. Those very same unions are also major supporters and campaign contributors to City Council members during election time as well.


KEM tapped as spokesperson for "The Heat and Warmth" (THAW) Fund


DETROIT - Grammy nominated artist and Detroit native KEM has been named spokesperson for The Heat & Warmth Fund (THAW), an independent non-profit (501(c)(3) agency that provides emergency energy assistance to Michigan residents in need and advocates for long-term energy solutions. KEM was introduced as THAW’s spokesperson today by Susan Sherer, CEO of THAW at the Week of Warmth press conference in Detroit. In his role as spokesperson, KEM launched THAW’s “Text to Give” campaign at the press conference.  
 


Tyress Mathews found guilty of homicide


DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Tyress Mathews was found guilty by a jury in connection with the July 28, 2010, homicide of Taylor Police Department Corporal Matthew Edwards. He was convicted before Judge Ulysses W. Boykin of: First Degree Murder (Life without Parole), Murder of a Police Officer (Life without Parole), Felon in Possession of a Firearm (5 years) and Felony Firearm (2 years Mandatory Consecutive). The case was tried by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Robert Stevens. Mathews will be sentenced November 28, 2011 at 9:00 a.m.

"The death of Cpl. Edwards was a senseless and violent act that took the life of a fine young officer. Just before his death he was recognized as Officer of the Year," said Prosecutor Worthy. "His death is a loss not only to his family but to the citizens of Taylor."


Heavy D dies at 44; singer helped shape rap music


Heavy D was the frontman of Heavy D and the Boyz, which fused New Jack Swing with reggae. He later became a record executive and had a successful acting career.

LOS ANGELES - Rapper and actor Heavy D, who played an influential role in shaping rap music in the late '80s and early '90s with a fusion of New Jack Swing and reggae, has died. He was 44.

Weekley and Howard charged in connection with the death of 7 year-old girl


DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Defendant Weekly is charged with Homicide - Involuntary Manslaughter and Careless Discharge of a Firearm Causing Injury or Death in connection with the death of Aiyana Stanley-Jones, a seven-year-old girl fatally shot during a DPD police raid. Defendant Howard is charged with Perjury and Obstruction of Justice. There is no hearing set for Friday, November 11, 2011. For both defendants the next dates are: March 2, 2011 for final conference and April 30, 2011 for a jury trial before Judge Cynthia Gray Hathaway.


Salary-gate: Big changes made at the top in the Wayne County Executive office


DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Late Thursday after noon Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano called a press conference at the Guardian building in downtown Detroit to announce staff changes at the top that shake up his administration and strain long time friendships.

As he has for weeks, Ficano acknowledged mistakes with payouts and vowed to rebuild his administration's credibility with transparency and reforms.
 


Boxing great Joe Frazier dies after cancer fight


PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Joe Frazier had to throw his greatest punch to knock down "The Greatest."

A vicious left hook from Frazier put Muhammad Ali on the canvas in the 15th round in March 1971 when he became the first man to beat him in the Fight of the Century at Madison Square Garden.

"That was the greatest thing that ever happened in my life," Frazier said.

It was his biggest night, one that would never come again.

The relentless, undersized heavyweight ruled the division as champion, then spent a lifetime trying to fight his way out of Ali's shadow.

Frazier, who died Monday night after a brief battle with liver cancer at the age of 67, will forever be associated with Ali. No one in boxing would ever dream of anointing Ali as The Greatest unless he, too, was linked to Smokin' Joe.

ROMULUS, Mich. - The chief executive for Detroit Metropolitan Airport was fired Monday after only two months on the job, following a messy severance deal now under FBI investigation over her former post as economic development director for Wayne County.

Wayne County Airport Authority members voted 5-2 to dismiss Turkia Mullin, saying she violated terms of her employment. She said she is pursuing legal action over the firing.

Suit by slain Detroit stripper's family dismissed


DETROIT - A federal judge dismissed a civil lawsuit Tuesday that claimed the city of Detroit and ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, a convicted felon, impeded a police investigation into the shooting death of a stripper.

U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen said in his opinion that the attorney representing Tamara Greene's three children failed to prove the city or Kilpatrick interfered with the probe into her slaying.

DETROIT, MI (Tell Us Det) - The Occupy Wall Street movement that started six weeks ago in New York moved into Detroit Friday afternoon. Carrying signs and chanting “Wall Street got bailed out, we got sold out!” several hundred protestors gathered before the Sprit of Detroit before marching in mass to Grand Circus Park.

We stopped a marcher carrying a sign that read “We Are The 99% We Weren’t Invited to the Wall Street Party”.  
 


Quicken Loans starts DPS Volunteer Business Corps at Chrysler Elementary School


About 300 volunteers to help improve academic performance of nearly 200 K-5 students

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Students at Detroit’s Chrysler Elementary cheered on Quicken Loans CEO Bill Emerson, in a pep rally to kick-off a six month mentoring program set to begin in November.

Some 300 Quicken Loans team members will be volunteering time, twice a week, to help improve the academic performance of K-5 students, particularly in the area of financial literacy. “It’s never too early to start talking about the value of a dollar and budgeting or understanding what they mean” said Emerson of the program.

UAW, Ford Reach Tentative Agreement, Adds 12,000 U.S. Jobs, Significant Investment


DEARBORN, MI – Ford Motor Company and the United Auto Workers union (UAW) have reached a tentative agreement on a new four-year labor contract covering approximately 41,000 UAW-represented employees in the United States.

On October 1, Detroit's poor become states' biggest losers due to welfare cutbacks


DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Beginning Saturday, October 1, 2011 cash assistance benefits will end for about 41,000 Michigan residents including an estimated 29,000 children. Over 50% of those loosing assistance live in Detroit.

Rev. Jesse Jackson who was in Detroit earlier this week, led about 200 marchers at the state's New Center Area offices Thursday in a protest against a new law that will end payments averaging $515 a month to thousands of residents.

City Council OKs request for 2012 Detroit Grand Prix


DETROIT - The City Council has approved an application to bring back the Detroit Grand Prix beginning in 2012.

Event chair Bud Denker says the council on Tuesday approved an application to hold the race on Belle Isle near downtown Detroit for a multi-year period beginning next year.

Denker says "nothing is confirmed" until sponsorship comes together in the next few weeks.

Race officials are eyeing June 1-3 for the event, which last ran in 2008 in Detroit. The race was canceled due to the poor economy.

The Detroit race series on Belle Isle started in 2007 after a six-year gap. Earlier auto races took place on streets around the Renaissance Center.

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - The Detroit Public Schools held a press conference Wednesday morning provide details of a foiled break-in at a vacant Paul Robeson Academy school building on the city's west side.

DPS Police Chief Roderick Grimes said five district police officers interrupted the break-in but one was injured in an encounter with a burglar during the process of arresting two men found inside the building.


Former Detroit Public Schools Official Sentenced on $3.32 million dollars fraud case


DETROIT, MI - A former high-level Detroit Public Schools (DPS) official who accepted cash kickbacks for authorizing DPS wire transfer payments to a vendor who submitted $3.32 million dollars in fraudulent invoices was sentenced today to 60 months’ imprisonment, and ordered to pay restitution to the Detroit Public Schools, United States Attorney Barbara L. McQuade announced today.

Evicted 101-year-old Detroit woman going back home


DETROIT - A 101-year-old woman who was evicted from her longtime Detroit home after her 65-year-old son failed to pay the mortgage is getting it back, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said Wednesday.

Texana Hollis was evicted Monday and her belongings were placed outside the home where she had lived for nearly six decades. Her son Warren Hollis said he didn't pay the bill for several years and disregarded eviction notices.

Former Kilpatrick aide pleads guilty to corruption and tax offenses


DETROIT, MI - Derrick Miller, 41, of McLean, Virginia, former Chief Administrative Officer of the City of Detroit, pleaded guilty today before United States District Judge Nancy G. Edmunds to corruption and tax offenses, United States Attorney Barbara L. McQuade announced today. McQuade was joined in the announcement by Andrew G. Arena, Special Agent In Charge of the Detroit Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Erick Martinez, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigations.


DPS, Roberts continue to push for greater numbers in the classroom

DPS celebrates Citywide Ribbon Cutting for nine new and renovated schools


DETROIT, MI - The first day of school will be an exciting eye-opening experience for 8,000 Detroit Public School students when they walk into their newly built or renovated school buildings on September 6th.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday at the new Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School to celebrate each of the nine public schools modernized as a result of a $500 million dollar bond proposal approved by voters in 2009..
