ANN ARBOR, MI -
Former Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore was fired Wednesday after the university concluded he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, and he remains jailed while awaiting an arraignment on anticipated criminal charges tied to a separate incident off campus. As of Friday, no formal charges had been publicly filed, but officials said he is expected to appear in a Washtenaw County courtroom for an initial hearing Friday afternoon.

Firing from Michigan
The University of Michigan announced Wednesday that Moore was terminated for cause following an internal investigation that found what officials described as credible evidence he had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member in violation of university policy. Athletic director Warde Manuel said the conduct breached the school’s standards and triggered a zero‑tolerance clause in Moore’s contract, meaning the school does not intend to pay out the remaining years on his deal.

Moore’s dismissal ends a two‑season tenure in which he went 18–8 as head coach, including a 9–3 record this year after taking over the program in 2024. His firing comes as Michigan football continues to navigate the fallout from recent NCAA sanctions and heightened scrutiny of the program’s leadership culture.

Arrest and detention
Hours after the firing was announced, Moore was arrested in the Ann Arbor area in connection with an alleged assault incident that occurred off campus, and he was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail on Wednesday night. Authorities have said he remained in custody through at least Friday morning while investigators continued their work and prosecutors weighed potential charges.

Law enforcement officials have not publicly detailed the full allegations, and they have declined to release a booking photo, saying such images are only distributed in cases of significant public safety concerns. The sheriff’s office has described the case as an active investigation and indicated that further information will be released through the courts once charges are formally filed.

Court proceedings status
Court officials said Friday that Moore is expected to be arraigned in 14A District Court in Ann Arbor, with the hearing anticipated in the early afternoon, the typical daily time for new criminal cases. Online court records in Washtenaw County did not yet list a case against Moore as of early Friday, reflecting that charging documents had not been fully processed ahead of the scheduled appearance.

At arraignment, Moore would be formally advised of any charges, and a judge would consider bond, release conditions, and future court dates, though those details will depend on what prosecutors ultimately file. Until then, Moore remains in jail and the exact nature of the criminal case against him has not been made public, leaving key questions unanswered even as his abrupt firing continues to reverberate across college football.
