UNC Fires Hubert Davis After Shocking First-Round NCAA Exit

CHAPEL HILL, NC - North Carolina has fired men's basketball coach Hubert Davis following a stunning first-round loss in the 2026 March Madness tournament. The No. 6-seeded Tar Heels blew a 19-point second-half lead to No. 11 VCU, falling 82-78 in overtime on March 19.

Game Collapse Details
VCU mounted the largest comeback in the NCAA tournament since 2018, erasing UNC's lead with a 12-0 run late in regulation. Terrence Hill Jr. sealed the win with a stepback 3-pointer in overtime. This marked UNC's second straight Round of 64 exit, following a loss to Ole Miss last year.

Tenure Overview
Davis, a UNC alum and successor to legend Roy Williams, coached five seasons with a 125-54 overall record. Highlights included a 2022 national championship game run and a 2024 ACC title, but recent failures like a 2023 tournament miss fueled pressure. The university will pay out over $5 million remaining on his contract.

Reaction and Next Steps
Athletic director Bubba Cunningham called it a tough decision to pursue elite consistency. Davis expressed gratitude on Instagram but aims to coach again soon. Potential replacements include Billy Donovan, Nate Oats, and Dusty May.
