TAMPA, FL – The Second Round of the 2026 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament concluded on Sunday with a massive shakeup at the top. The defending national champion and South Region No. 1 seed Florida Gators were sent packing by No. 9 Iowa in a 73-72 thriller, marking the most significant upset of the tournament thus far.

The Hawkeyes relied on a physical defensive performance to neutralize Florida’s frontcourt. Despite a late 72-70 lead for the Gators, Iowa’s Alvaro Folgueiras drained a corner three-pointer with seconds remaining to seal the victory. Tavion Banks led the charge for Iowa with 20 points, as the Hawkeyes become the lowest seed remaining in the South Region.

In other Sunday results, St. John's defeated Kansas 67-65 in a major East Region battle. UConn handled UCLA 73-57, while Alabama cruised past Texas Tech 90-65. Tennessee took down Virginia 79-72 behind 21 points from Ja'Kobi Gillespie. Arizona moved on by beating Utah State 78-66, Iowa State stifled Kentucky 82-63, and Purdue defeated Miami 79-69.

Along with Florida's exit, the Kansas Jayhawks fell to a resilient St. John’s team. The Red Storm win marks a significant milestone for the program, returning them to the Sweet 16. Iowa, Iowa State, and Purdue all secured wins on Sunday, ensuring the Big Ten remains heavily represented. Both UConn and Iowa State flexed their defensive muscles, holding high-powered offenses like UCLA and Kentucky to under 65 points.

The action shifts to the regional semifinals starting Thursday, March 26. Notable matchups include a West Region clash between No. 1 Arizona and No. 4 Arkansas, while the top-seeded Duke Blue Devils prepare to face the surging St. John's in Washington, D.C. on Friday.
