DETROIT
— U.S.
Rep.
Haley
Stevens
endorsed
Republican
Senate
candidate
Mike
Rogers
on
Sunday
after
attending
a
service
with him
at
Perfecting
Church
in
Detroit,
breaking
with her
party’s
nominee
just two
days
before
the
election.
The
Michigan
Democrat
announced
her
endorsement
after
appearing
alongside
Rogers,
his
wife,
Kristi,
and
Stevens’
fiancé,
Jason
Turkish,
at the
church.
Stevens
had
previously
pledged
to
support
the
Democratic
ticket
after
losing
the
party’s
August
Senate
primary
to Abdul
El-Sayed.
“As you
may have
seen,
our
Democratic
nominee
for U.S.
Senate,
Abdul,
said I
was no
longer
welcome
in his
campaign
and that
I should
stay
away,
and he’s
right,”
Stevens
said in
a video
posted
Sunday.
“And
that’s
why I am
endorsing
Mike
Rogers
for the
U.S.
Senate
today.”
The
announcement
followed
a public
dispute
between
Stevens
and
El-Sayed
that
derailed
a
planned
joint
appearance
intended
to
demonstrate
Democratic
unity.
Stevens
had been
scheduled
to
attend a
separate
Detroit
church
event
Sunday
with
El-Sayed
and U.S.
Rep.
James
Clyburn
of South
Carolina.
That
event
proceeded
without
her.
The
disagreement
centered
in part
on an
advertisement
criticizing
U.S.
taxpayer
support
for
Israel.
Stevens
had
demanded
that
El-Sayed
reject
the
advertisement
and
apologize
for
rhetoric
she
considered
inflammatory
and
offensive.
In her
endorsement
announcement,
she also
criticized
El-Sayed’s
association
with
streamer
Hasan
Piker,
who
campaigned
with him
during
the
primary.
El-Sayed’s
campaign
subsequently
told
Stevens
she was
no
longer
welcome
at
campaign
events,
NBC News
reported.
Her
decision
to
support
Rogers
marked a
reversal
from her
stated
intention
just
days
earlier
to back
her
party’s
ticket.
At
Perfecting
Church,
a
livestream
showed
Stevens
seated
beside
Rogers
as the
candidates
and
their
companions
attended
the
service.
Rogers
stood
and
waved
when he
was
introduced
to the
congregation.
Stevens
later
spoke to
reporters
outside
the
church
and
confirmed
her
support
for him.
“I am
endorsing
Mike
Rogers
for the
United
States
Senate.
I am one
vote in
this
state.
Michigan
is a
swing
state,”
Stevens
said,
adding
that
most of
the rest
of her
ballot
would
still be
cast for
Democrats.
Rogers’
campaign
welcomed
her
appearance.
“Mike
welcomes
her,”
spokesperson
Abby
Ronson
told NBC
News
before
Stevens
publicly
announced
the
endorsement.
The move
exposed
a
Democratic
split at
a
consequential
moment
in
Michigan’s
closely
contested
Senate
race,
turning
a
planned
day of
party
unity
into a
public
show of
support
for the
Republican
nominee.
