Braces
for
Disruption
as Trump
Heads to
Madison

Garden

NEW YORK
—
Midtown
Manhattan
is under
heavy
security
tonight
as
President
Donald
Trump is
expected
to
attend
Game 3
of the
NBA
Finals
at
Madison
Square
Garden,
a visit
that has
prompted
road
closures,
stricter
entry
procedures,
and the
cancellation
of an
outdoor
watch
party
outside
the
arena.
Local
and
federal
officials
have
prepared
a
heightened
security
posture
around
MSG,
including
a hard
closure
around
the
venue,
no
vehicle
access,
and no
pedestrian
travel
through
the
secured
area,
according
to law
enforcement
sources.
The
Seventh
and
Eighth
Avenue
corridors
around
the
Garden
are
expected
to be
closed,
and fans
entering
the
building
are
being
told to
arrive
at least
two
hours
early
because
of
airport-style
screening.
The New
York
Police
Department
said
there
will be
no watch
party
outside
Madison
Square
Garden
for Game
3, a
decision
made
with the
Secret
Service
after
Friday
night's
postgame
gathering
spilled
into the
streets
and led
to
arrests.
MSG said
the
permit
for the
Plaza33
watch
party
was
denied
by the
city's
permitting
office
in
consultation
with the
NYPD,
while
the
White
House
said the
change
is not
about
the
president.
Fans
attending
the game
have
also
been
warned
not to
bring
bags,
backpacks,
or totes
of any
size,
and
officials
are
asking
ticket
holders
to plan
for
significant
delays
before
tipoff.
Despite
the
security
perimeter,
Penn
Station
is
expected
to
remain
open,
and
officials
do not
anticipate
disruptions
to rail
service
beneath
the
arena.
The
disruptions
come as
the
Knicks
return
home
with a
2-0
series
lead and
the city
is
already
buzzing
around
the
team's
playoff
run. For
many
fans,
the
biggest
impact
tonight
may be
outside
the
arena,
where
normal
Midtown
movement
is
expected
to be
constrained
by
security
and
traffic
restrictions
tied to
the
presidential
visit.
