anniversary
brings
solemn
tributes
across
America
NEW YORK

Americans
today
mark the
25th
anniversary
of the
Sept.
11,
2001,
terrorist
attacks,
remembering
the
2,977
people
killed
at the
World
Trade
Center,
the
Pentagon
and near
Shanksville,
Pennsylvania.
Family
members,
survivors,
first
responders
and
public
officials
gathered
at
memorial
sites in
New
York,
Virginia
and
Pennsylvania
for
readings
of
victims’
names,
moments
of
silence
and
wreath-laying
ceremonies.
The
annual
commemoration
at the
National
September
11
Memorial
& Museum
began at
8:30
a.m.
Eastern,
with the
first
moment
of
silence
observed
at 8:46
a.m.,
the time
the
first
hijacked
plane
struck
the
North
Tower.
For this
year’s
milestone
observance,
the New
York
memorial
added a
seventh
moment
of
silence
to honor
people
who
later
died
from
illnesses
linked
to the
toxic
aftermath
of the
attacks.
Communities
nationwide
also
planned
flag
tributes,
vigils
and
service
projects
in
remembrance
of the
victims
and
those
who
responded.
