Wilberforce,
Ohio)
with a
Bachelor
of
Science
degree.
Wilberforce
University
is where
he met
his
beloved
wife
Harriet
Luella
Payne.
Their
marriage
has
lasted
74
years-a
love
that is
forever.
He later
received
a
Masters
Degree
in
biological
science
from the
University
of
Detroit.
He was a
certified
microbiologist.

William
Lawrence
Young
lived
his life
giving
back to
the
community
he
loved.
Born
March
10, 1921
to
Joseph
and
Dellar
Bumpus
Young in
Covington,
Tennessee,
he was
the
sixth
and
youngest
boy in
the
family
of 6
boys and
six
girls.
Larry
would
have
celebrated
his
101st
birthday
in
March.
In 1989
having
served
the city
for 37 ½
years he
retired
as
Director
of the
Bureau
of Food
Sanitation
for the
City of
Detroit
under
the late
Mayor
Coleman
A Young.
Larry
was also
appointed
by
Governor
Blanchard
and
Governor
Engler
to serve
on the
Michigan
Commission
for the
Blind.
He was
instrumental
in the
passage
of the
Disabilities
Act. He
was also
a member
of the
Executive
Board of
the
Detroit
Branch
of the
NAACP,
and he
was also
a member
of Alpha
Phi
Alpha
fraternity.
Larry
Young is
the
Founder
and
first
Charter
President
of the
Renaissance
Lions
Club,
Detroit.
Serving
in all
preliminary
offices,
Larry
became
the
first
Black
Lion
Governor
in
Michigan.
At the
international
convention
in Hong
Kong,
1992
Larry
became
the
second
Black
elected
International
Director.
Among
his many
achievements
Larry
has
received
the S.A.
Dodge
Award-The
highest
in
Michigan;
The
Ambassador
of
Goodwill
Award-Highest
in Lions
International;
Inducted
into the
Michigan
Lions
Hall of
Fame; A
Michigan
Lions
award
for
District
11A1 in
his
honor,
“The
Larry
Young
Award.”
Larry
was also
a
Pioneer
member,
Men’s
Day
Chairman,
Trustee,
St.
Stephen
Bridge
Builder,
and
secured
a
Pre-school
program
grant
for his
church-St.
Stephen
A.M.E
church
of
Detroit.
Larry
graduated
from
Frazier

in

afternoon
of
January
12, 2022
at
Beaumont
Hospital
Royal
Oak,
Michigan.
Larry
was
preceded
by in
death by
his
parents
and 11
siblings.
Larry
leaves
to
cherish

memories

loving
wife
Harriet
Luella
Young,
daughters:
Olive
Cherie
Richardson
(Marcus)
and
Janice
Marie
Young;
granddaughter:
Camille
Marie
(Copeland)
Brown
(Robert);
great-granddaughters:
Asia
Camille
Flint
and
Ashley
Marie
Copeland
and a
host of
cousins,
nieces,
nephews
and
friends.
Funeral
