Gordie Howe International Bridge Opens Registration for the  Discounted Toll Program

WINDSOR, ON - Travelers preparing for the upcoming opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge can now register for "Breakaway" personal accounts to access discounted toll rates.

The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) and Bridging North America (BNA) announced the launch of the registration portal on Tuesday, expanding the program to individuals and families following an initial rollout for commercial businesses.

Toll Structure and Discounts
Under the newly released fare schedule, passenger vehicles—defined as those under 2.3 meters (7.5 feet) in height—will pay a standard toll of $8 CAD ($5.75 USD) per crossing. However, motorists who register for a Breakaway account and install a vehicle tag will receive a 25% discount, reducing the cost to $6 CAD ($4.35 USD).

The system is designed for automated payments; tagged vehicles can use any open toll lane, where sensors will process the transaction and lift the gate within seconds.

Preparing for a Spring Opening
The bridge, which connects Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, Michigan, is slated to open this spring. Officials stated that the registration launch is a critical step in "validating the systems and operations" required for opening day.

"Launching Breakaway personal accounts is part of that preparation, helping ensure both the infrastructure and its users are ready for a successful first crossing," said David Henderson, CEO of Bridging North America.

Regional Connectivity
The new crossing is expected to significantly alter traffic patterns in the Great Lakes region by providing direct links to major expressways:

Ontario: Highway 401, Highway 3, E.C. Row Expressway, and local Windsor arteries.

Michigan: I-75, I-96, I-94, and M-10 (The Lodge).

Chuck Andary, Interim CEO of the WDBA, noted that the accounts are intended for a range of users, from daily commuters to occasional vacationers looking to save time and costs.

Public Information Meetings
To assist residents with the transition and answer questions regarding the new tolling system, the WDBA has scheduled two public information meetings in April:

Windsor Meeting: Wednesday, April 15, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Mackenzie Hall (3277 Sandwich Street).

Detroit Meeting: Wednesday, April 22, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the CHASS Center (5635 W Fort Street).

Questions are being accepted in advance via email at info@wdbridge.com. The deadline for advance submissions is April 13, 2026.

Registration is currently available through the bridge website https://gordiehoweinternationalbridge.com .
