Centers,
Expands

Capacity
Ahead of
Cold
Snap
DETROIT
- The
City of
Detroit
has
activated
its
network
of
daytime
warming
centers
and
significantly
increased
its
overnight
shelter
capacity
in
response
to a
forecasted
drop in
temperatures,
officials
announced
Tuesday.
City
recreation
centers
and
Detroit
Public
Library
branches
will
serve as
free
daytime
respite
sites
for
residents
needing
immediate
relief
from the
cold,
operating
during
their
standard
business
hours.
The
citys
winter
response
plan
includes
boosting
overall
shelter
capacity
to more
than
1,700
beds
this
season,
an
increase
of
approximately
250 beds
from the
previous
winter.
This
capacity
includes
a
minimum
of
220
drop-in
center
beds
for
immediate
access
for
those
sleeping
outside,
100
warming
center
beds,
and an
additional
50
stand-by
beds
designated
for
emergency
weather
events
or "Code
Blue"
alerts.
City
officials
confirmed
that
targeted
street
outreach
and
coordination
with the
Detroit
Police
Department
will
continue
to
ensure
unsheltered
residents
can
reach
drop-in
locations.

through
Friday
