DETROIT — The city’s 23rd annual tree-lighting celebration will take place Friday, Nov. 20, at Campus Martius Park, with free entertainment and holiday activities from 4 to 9 p.m.

Presented by the DTE Foundation and produced by the Downtown Detroit Partnership, the event will feature live performances, Olympic figure skaters and more than 1 million lights throughout the celebration.

The centerpiece will be a 70-foot Norway spruce from Mesick in northern Michigan, decorated with oversized ornaments and more than 25,000 LED lights. Santa Claus will join city officials and local dignitaries for the ceremonial lighting.

Elaine Zinger, whose family donated the tree, said her late husband and one of their children planted it nearly 45 years ago as a gift to her.

“It holds so many wonderful memories for our family, and now it gets to become part of a special holiday memory for thousands of families in Downtown Detroit,” Zinger said.

Visitors will be able to watch the festivities at the MGM Grand Detroit Main Stage or on large screens throughout Campus Martius Park and Cadillac Square.

David Cowan, chief public spaces officer at the Downtown Detroit Partnership, said the celebration also marks the beginning of weeks of downtown holiday activities, including skating at the park’s rink.

“These experiences create connections, support local businesses and deliver an important economic boost to Downtown throughout the holidays,” Cowan said.

Rodney Cole, president of the DTE Foundation and DTE Corporate Citizenship, said the annual gathering gives families and friends an opportunity to celebrate together.

“That sense of connection is what makes this tradition so meaningful,” Cole said.

WDIV Local 4 will broadcast a two-hour live special beginning at 7 p.m. Coverage will also be available on Local 4+ and ClickOnDetroit, with additional reporting throughout the day.
