DETROIT
- A
Detroit
nonprofit
is
channeling
the
city's
annual
313 Day
celebration
into
something
meant to
last far
longer
than a
single
day.
The
Children's
Center,
which
has
served
Detroit
families
for
nearly a
century,
has
launched
an
online
auction
tied to
313 Day
— the
annual
March 13
celebration
of
Detroit
pride —
with
proceeds
going
toward a
permanent
citywide
endowment.
The
auction
goes
live
March 1
and runs
through
March
13,
2026.
Funds
raised
will
benefit
the
Michigan
Central
Station
Children's
Endowment
Initiative,
a
collaborative
effort
among
eleven
local
nonprofits
aimed at
ensuring
long-term
access
to
children's
services
across
Detroit's
313 area
code.
The
organization
currently
serves
more
than
4,000
children
annually.
All
donations
made on
313 Day
itself
will be
matched.
Auction
items
include
a
24-ticket
suite at
Ford
Field
for Ed
Sheeran's
August
29
concert
and a
$10,000
retail
credit
at the
new
Detroit
Restoration
Hardware
store.
Minimum
bids are
required,
and the
auction
is
conducted
entirely
online.
"Detroit
pride is
not just
something
we
celebrate,"
said
Desiree
Jennings,
President
and CEO
of The
Children's
Center.
"It is
something
we
invest
in. And
this
endowment
ensures
support
for
children
every
year,
because
children
are the
future
of the
313."
The
initiative
comes
amid
ongoing
concerns
about
high
rates of
trauma,
instability,
and
limited
access
to
mental
health
care
among
Detroit's
youth,
which
advocates
say
require
early
and
sustained
intervention.
