CLAIRMONT, CA - A shooting incident occurred at the Islamic Center of San Diego—the largest mosque complex in San Diego County—around noon local time on Monday, May 18, 2026. The San Diego Police Department has confirmed that five people are dead, including three victims and both suspected gunmen. Authorities are currently investigating the attack as a hate crime.

Gunfire erupted at the Islamic Center campus on Eckstrom Avenue in Clairemont, about 9 miles north of downtown San Diego. The campus includes a mosque and the Al Rashid School. Witnesses reported hearing approximately 30 shots fired from what sounded like semi-automatic weapons. Imam Taha Hassane and local law enforcement confirmed that all children and staff at the school are safe. Aerial footage showed emergency responders safely evacuating more than a dozen children from the scene.

Police confirmed that three men inside the complex were fatally shot. One of the victims has been identified as a security guard working at the center. A landscaper working down the street was also shot at by the suspects but was not struck.

The two suspected shooters, identified by police as teenagers aged 17 and 19, were found dead inside a vehicle at the scene. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl stated that both suspects are believed to have died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

The San Diego Police Department and federal partners are treating the investigation as a hate crime. A definitive motive has not yet been publicly released. Police announced that the threat has been neutralized and the scene is contained, though a massive law enforcement presence remains on-site. Authorities established a formal family reunification center at 4125 Hathaway Street, San Diego, CA 92111. Local road closures and lockdowns on nearby schools have begun lifting as the area is secured.
