CLAIRMONT,
CA - A
shooting
incident
occurred
at the
Islamic
Center
of San
Diego—the
largest
mosque
complex
in San
Diego
County—around
noon
local
time on
Monday,
May 18,
2026.
The San
Diego
Police
Department
has
confirmed
that
five
people
are
dead,
including
three
victims
and both
suspected
gunmen.
Authorities
are
currently
investigating
the
attack
as a
hate
crime.
Gunfire
erupted
at the
Islamic
Center
campus
on
Eckstrom
Avenue
in
Clairemont,
about 9
miles
north of
downtown
San
Diego.
The
campus
includes
a mosque
and the
Al
Rashid
School.
Witnesses
reported
hearing
approximately
30 shots
fired
from
what
sounded
like
semi-automatic
weapons.
Imam
Taha
Hassane
and
local
law
enforcement
confirmed
that all
children
and
staff at
the
school
are
safe.
Aerial
footage
showed
emergency
responders
safely
evacuating
more
than a
dozen
children
from the
scene.
Police
confirmed
that
three
men
inside
the
complex
were
fatally
shot.
One of
the
victims
has been
identified
as a
security
guard
working
at the
center.
A
landscaper
working
down the
street
was also
shot at
by the
suspects
but was
not
struck.
The two
suspected
shooters,
identified
by
police
as
teenagers
aged 17
and 19,
were
found
dead
inside a
vehicle
at the
scene.
San
Diego
Police
Chief
Scott
Wahl
stated
that
both
suspects
are
believed
to have
died
from
self-inflicted
gunshot
wounds.
The San
Diego
Police
Department
and
federal
partners
are
treating
the
investigation
as a
hate
crime. A
definitive
motive
has not
yet been
publicly
released.
Police
announced
that the
threat
has been
neutralized
and the
scene is
contained,
though a
massive
law
enforcement
presence
remains
on-site.

family
reunification
center

San
Diego,

Local
road
closures
and
lockdowns
on
nearby
schools
have
begun
lifting
as the
area is
secured.
