DETROIT
- Mayor
Mike
Duggan
announced
a $50
million
plan to
transform
28 acres
of the
former
Packard
Plant
into
Packard
Park, a
mixed-use
development
that
aims to
turn one
of
Detroit’s
most
visible
symbols
of urban
decline
into a
vibrant
hub for
jobs,
housing,
and
culture.
The
redevelopment
will
center
around
an
iconic
Albert
Kahn-designed
building,
which
will be
converted
into 42
affordable
units
that
combine
living
space
with
work
areas
for
creatives
and
entrepreneurs.
The
building
is also
set to
feature
Detroit's
first
indoor
skate
park,
the
Museum
of
Detroit
Electronic
Music
(MODEM),
and
community
programming
spaces,
all
surrounded
by over
two
acres of
indoor
and
outdoor
public
space.

“For
more
than 60
years
this
site sat
idle.
Today,
we
declare
that
those
days are
over.
The
Packard
Park
will be
a symbol
of what
is
possible
when
Detroiters,
public
partners,
and
committed
developers
work
together
with
imagination
and
purpose,”
said
Mayor-elect
Mary
Sheffield.
“This is
how we
honor
our past
while
building
our
future —
by
preserving
history,
creating
jobs,
expanding
housing,
and
investing
in
culture
and
community
all at
once."

Adjacent
to this
historic
structure,
a new
manufacturing
facility
spanning
393,000
square
feet is
planned,
creating
300
permanent
manufacturing
jobs and
supporting
additional
construction
employment.
City
leaders
highlighted
the
years of
effort
that
went
into
regaining
and
preparing
the
site,
emphasizing
the
project's
role in
both
preserving
Detroit’s
history
and
building
its
future.

“Where
other
efforts
have
stalled,
we feel
momentum
and a
spirit
of
collaboration
to
finally
redevelop
the
Packard
site as
Packard
Park,”
said
co-developer
Mark
Bennett.
“As
stewards
to the
city, we
will
work
together
with
neighbors,
creators
and our
P4
partners,
to
complete
this
purpose-driven
development
that
will
bring
culture,
housing
and jobs
to the
city for
this
generation
and
beyond,”
