Women
Just
Aren’t
Safe

DETROIT
- In the
movie
The
Color
Purple…..Oprah’s
character
Sophia
states,
“A Girl
Child
ain’t
safe in
a family
of
mens”.
Well,
seeing
that we
often
spend
much
more
time
with our
co-workers
than our
actual
family…..the
workplace
in a
since is
an
extended
family.
Especially,
in an
educational
setting,
where we
hear “It
Takes a
Village
to Raise
a
Child”.
Did not
Former
DPS
Board
President
Otis
Mathis,
understand
that he
was
apart of
the
village
when he
began to
engage
in
inappropriate
sexual
behaviors
toward
Superintendent
Teresa
Guesyer.
I am
sure
that
this
highly
credentialed
professional
woman
felt
just
like
Sophia
with her
level of
disgust,
anger,
and
embarrassment.
Now,
while at
an Open
House
for a
resent
high
school
graduate,
a group
of
professional
women
were
talking
about
the
situation
with the
former
DPS
Board
President
and out
of the 5
women
…each of
them had
a story
of some
inappropriate
behavior
on the
job by a
male.
One
woman
shared
that at
the age
of 23 a
male
boss
grabbed
her
buttock.
She
further
explained
that it
was not
a rub or
accidental
touch
but he
grabbed
a hand
full of
her
rear-end.
The
stories
continued
with
each
woman
becoming
very
irritated
by the
fact
that
they had
to
endure
such
behaviors
in the
work
place.
I feel
very
strongly
that
girls
and boys
need to
be
educated
about
inappropriate
sexual
behaviors
at least
in high
school.
The
behavior
that
Former
President
Mathis
engaged
in is a
form of
“exhibitionism”
which is
categorized
as a
person
showing
their
genitals
or
rubbing
themselves
to an
unexpecting
person.
This is
a
diagnosis
within
the DSM
IV. The
problem
is most
people
do not
tell as
inappropriate
sexual
behaviors
for some
reason
makes
the
victim
feel
ashamed.
We must
create
open
dialogue
so
people
feel
free to
share
their
experiences
without
hearing
things
like…”When
she must
have
provoked
it with
her
dress,
words,
etc”.
I want
to say
You Go
Superintendent,
as you
are a
shining
example
of
valuing
yourself
and not
allowing
someone
else’s
sick,
twisted
behavior
cause
you to
feel
shame.
Your
action
takes us
all as
women to
a place
of being
SAFE!!!!!
