Daughter
returned
home to
mother
involved
in
12-hour
police
standoff
DETROIT
(Tell Us
Det) - A
Detroit
mother
has
regained
custody
of the
daughter
she lost
after
refusing
to give
the teen
a
powerful
anti-psychotic
drug and
holding
police
at bay
outside
their
home.
A
juvenile
court
judge
ruled
Thursday
that
Maryanne
Godboldo
can take
her
daughter
Ariana
home.
Outside
the
courthouse
Thursday,
Godboldo
was
clearly
relieved.
“I feel
wonderful,
of
course,
because
my
daughter
has been
legally,
on
paper,
given
back to
me …
which,
in my
mind,
she’s
never
been
taken
away,”
Godboldo
said.
"She
will be
returned
to me
legally
on paper
today,"
said
Godboldo.
"We
still
have
some
things
that
they
have
requested
of us,
but
we're
not
worried
because
it's
already
in
place.
It's
what
I've
been
doing
since my
daughter's
been
born."
Ariana
has been
living
with
Godboldo's
sister.
Her
mother
was
allowed
supervised
visitation.
A jury
in
August
found
Godboldo
guilty
of
neglect.
A judge
also
reversed
criminal
charges
against
Godboldo
in the
March
standoff.
She had
been
accused
of
firing a
shot at
police.
Godboldo
had been
battling
the
Michigan
Department
of Human
Services
after
she took
her
daughter
off
Risperdal,
which
often is
used to
contain
aggression
and
treat
autism.
Ariana
was 13
at the
time.
Both
Godboldo
and her
attorney,
Wanda
Evans,
were
jubliant
as they
left
juvenile
court.
"We are
happy at
the
result
today
that
Ariana
is being
returned
to her
mother.
The
judge
emphatically
said
that she
would
not
order
any
medication
for
Ariana
unless
the
mother
were to
consent
because
it is
the
mother's
right to
make
that
medication
decision,
the
parents'
rights,
and that
needs to
stay
intact.
The
constitution
is a
fundamental
right."
Godboldo
had been
charged
with
discharge
of a
weapon
and
three
counts
of
felonious
assault,
among
other
charges,
stemming
from a
12-hour
standoff
with
police
in
March.
The case
against
her has
brought
national
attention,
but 36th
District
Court
Judge
Ronald
Giles
dismissed
all
criminal
charges
against
Godboldo
late
last
month.
