DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Nearly 50,000 people attended the gay pride celebration this year. Motor City Pride, Michigan’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender citizens took to the streets of downtown Detroit Sunday for a weekend packed with multiple events including a family picnic, golf outing, with a parade spanning nearly a quarter mile long, and a summer riverfront festival at Hart Plaza.

Event officials stated that holding a festival in the historic Hart Plaza solidifies the notion of LGBT people as active parts of the larger community. Additionally, it shows the strength, vitality and unity of our community within the collective fabric of Southeastern Michigan.

The gay pride festival was expected to draw about 35,000 people, but an event organizer said today that number may grow to 50,000 because of high turnout Saturday, the first day.

Motor City Pride began as a civil rights march down Woodward Avenue 25 years ago and grew into a weekend-long, multi-event festival of gay pride. The event, formerly known as the Michigan Organization for Human Rights March and later PrideFest, has taken place in Detroit, Lansing, Royal Oak and even a local college gymnasium.

Acts appearing over the weekend included rapper Cazwell, pop singer Kimberly Cole, "America's Got Talent" contestant Alexis Jordan and Dave Aude. Well-known local acts such as cover band Killer Flamingos and rapper Invincible also played.

This is the 40th year for gay pride celebrations in southeast Michigan, according to Equality Michigan, the organizer of the fest.
