DETROIT – Detroit City Councilman Andre Spivey, former Detroit Lions Calvin Johnson and Rob Sims along with a host of volunteers provided hundreds of families with the necessary items to make dinner at home. Each family received a basket containing items such as a whole turkey, yams, Jiffy corn muffin mix, sugar, onions, and more.

“Operation: Giving Thanks is one of the events I look forward to every year.” Spivey said. “We were unsure if we were going to be able to have the event, but we know families across our city need this extra help because of the impact COVID-19 has had on our community, so we had to get creative. I want to thank all of our sponsors for their support in bringing my vision to life.”

It’s no question that there are households that need help during the holiday season and COVID-19 has added to that burden. To continue a much-needed event, Councilman Spivey and his team decided to put the ingredients needed to make staple Thanksgiving items into a basket and encourage families to enjoy the meal at home. One basket cost $30 to make and donations were asked of community members to help feed as many families as possible.

The Elia Group is the event’s title sponsor. Additional sponsors include the Iconic Collection, encompassing 220 Merrill and Parc restaurants, Comcast, TCF Bank, Ambassador Bridge Company, and the 5th Precinct Neighborhood Police Officers.

“Although this year has not been without challenges for all of us, we believe everyone deserves a Happy Thanksgiving Day complete with a hot meal to enjoy and share with family,” said Zaid Elia, CEO, The Elia Group. “Being a business owner means supporting the community and treating everyone like family. We are very fortunate that we can help make Councilman Spivey’s reimagined community dinner a reality.”
