Students at Breithaupt Career and Technical Center offer gourmet meals to the public

The students will kick off their regular bi-monthly Friday lunch buffets on Friday October 21

DETROIT - The culinary students at Detroit Public Schools’ Breithaupt Career and Technical Center will officially kick off their new season of regular restaurant service at the school, 9300 Hubbell, with their Grand Opening Buffet from 11:30 am. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday October 21.

Under the guidance of trained chefs, students in the fine dining program run all aspects of their own restaurant operation 11 times during the school year. For $15, guests can select from Shrimp Bisque and French Onion soups, assorted salads, Roast Beef with Red Wine Mushroom Sauce, Asian Chicken Breast, and Baked Orange Roughy with Roasted Red Pepper Beurre Blanc and sides that include Garlic Whipped Potatoes, Ginger Teriyaki Noodles, and Sautéed Spinach with Caramelized Onion. There will also be a selection of desserts from the school’s Bake Shop. Each buffet will feature a different menu.

Other student services available to the public include event catering, the return of their popular catered Thanksgiving meals and the addition of Christmas dinner catering this year. Fresh, student-butchered cuts of meat, along with a wide range of baked goods are also available for purchase at the school. Students run all aspects of the enterprises, from bookkeeping to pricing to marketing. All proceeds go back to programming at the school.

Students in the two-year Culinary Program at Breithaupt rotate every nine to 10 weeks through Hospitality and Tourism, Bake Shop, Fine Dining, Gourmet Cooking, Fundamentals of Cooking, Deli/Fast Food and Meat Shop.

“Our focus is to have a well-rounded student, so they can go directly into the job market or continue their education at culinary institutes,” said Director Vanessa Spencer.

Across town at Golightly Career and Technical Center, culinary students will kick off their seasonal restaurant opening on Friday November 18, at the school’s restaurant, The Glass House, 900 Dickerson.
