FBI to
investigate
police
shooting
of 7
year old

The FBI
is
stepping
in to
investigate
the May
shooting
death of
a 7
year-old
by
Detroit
Police
at the
request
of U.S.
Rep.
John
Conyers.
In a
statement
released
Wednesday
Conyers
said
“The
shooting
of
Aiyana
Jones
has
shaken
the
entire
city
community,
and it
demands
a
thorough
and
independent
investigation.”
Congressman
Conyers,
who is
Chairman
of the
House
Judiciary
Committee,
said he
asked
the FBI
to get
involved
because
“It is
plain
that
something
went
very,
very
wrong in
the
Jones’
home
last May
16, and
this
investigation
will
shed
much
needed
light on
these
tragic
events.
The
course
of
events
that
tragically
took
life of
Aiyana
Jones
during a
police
raid,
while
she
slept on
a coach
in a
home on
Lillibridge,
have in
disrupt
from the
start.
Police
threw a
flash-bang
grenade
through
the
window
and upon
entering
the
home;
they say
a woman
inside
scuffled
with a
police
officer
which
caused
his
weapon
to
discharge,
killing
the 7
year-old.
The
family
hired
Southfield
attorney
Jeffery
Fieger
to
represent
their
interests.
Interim
Chief of
Police
Ralph
Godbee
was in
command
of the
department
the
night of
the
incident.
Then
chief,
Warren
Evans
was out
of the
country
on
vacation.
Investigation
of the
shooting
was
turned
over to
the
Michigan
State
Police
three
months,
report
on their
findings
is still
pending.
The
FBI’s
findings
will be
reviewed
by
prosecutors
from the
Justice
Department’s
Criminal
Rights
Division.
In his
statement
Conyers
said” I
have
been
assured
by the
Justice
Department
that
they
will
take a
very
careful
look at
this
matter
and
that, if
the
facts
warrant,
they
will be
aggressive
in
responding.”
