Update: Man charged in assault of 70-year-old woman held on $1 Million bond

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - 49-year-old Christopher Elledge was charged Thursday in the beating and robbery of a 70-year-old woman that was caught on surveillance video.

Christopher Elledge was arraigned in 36th District Court on home invasion, unarmed robbery, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, larceny and larceny in a building. His bond was set by the court at $1 million.

Chief Magistrate Millicent Sherman doubled the $500,000 bond requested by prosecutors for Elledge.

The June 28 attack which was caught on video shows 70 year old Annie Smith opening an exterior door to her apartment building on East Jefferson Avenue and letting a man inside.

Once inside, Elledge hit Smith repeatedly, knocking her to the floor. He then searched her clothing for money or other valuables. He calmly walked away with cash, Smith's bridge card and a credit card.

The video outraged the public. A citizen's tip led to Elledge's arrest on Sunday.

"In a civilized society we expect that our citizens will be able to go about their day doing their everyday business," said Prosecutor Worthy. "Instead this senior citizen came back to her home from shopping and was viciously attacked and treated like a human punching bag."

Her office said that as of Thursday afternoon, Elledge did not have a lawyer representing him.
