City employees and volunteers keep Detroit safe during 2011 Angels' Night

Fires Drop 44 Percent From Last Year

DETROIT - Mayor Dave Bing announced today that fires during the Angels’ Night period dropped 44% from last year, making this year’s effort the most successful in history.

According to the Detroit Fire Department, there were 94 total fires during the three-night Angels’ Night weekend, Oct. 29-31. In 2010, there were 169 fires reported. The Mayor credited the success of this year’s campaign to the hard work of the Detroit Fire, Homeland Security, Police and other City departments, volunteers and sponsors.

"Over the last three nights, fires decreased by nearly 50 percent from 2010," said Mayor Dave Bing. "Our community spoke loud and clear. We told the nay-sayers that our city is strong. Our neighborhoods are united and our people ever vigilant."

The Angels’ Night campaign began in July as the Detroit Homeland Security, Fire and Police departments came together to develop a strategic deployment plan and to partner with federal and state law enforcement agencies.

City departments also demonstrated an unprecedented level of information sharing to reduce possible fire hazards and to recruit volunteers. Personnel from Mayor Bing’s administration also contacted businesses to help offset the costs of the three-day campaign.

“I would like to thank Detroit fire fighters and other Detroit Fire Department personnel for their exceptional efforts leading up to and during the three-day Angels’ Night period,” said Detroit Fire Commissioner Donald Austin.

Mayor Bing also praised the residents who joined the effort by patrolling city streets, watching abandoned structures and turning on their porch lights.

More than 19,343 individual volunteers joined community groups from across the city in a variety of capacities including car patrols, watching over their neighborhoods, providing meals, and supporting administrative tasks.

In an effort to engage Detroit youth and to promote the Angels’ Night message, the City also held a poster and oratorical contest for K-12 students. A total of 830 students entered the contest. The first, second and third-place winners received a computer, digital camera and a gift certificate respectively.
